Tokio Marine to build Japan’s Largest Wooden Office building in central Tokyo |
The building is set to cover a total floor area of 124,000 square meters, with a height of 107 meters. The structure will be built using a combination of steel and wood, making it one of the largest wooden buildings in Japan. Mitsubishi Jisho Design oversees the design work, while a joint venture of construction companies, Takenaka Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Taisei Corporation, and Toda Corporation, have been commissioned to construct the building. The groundbreaking is scheduled for March 2025, with completion targeted for August 2028.
The structure will consist of three basement and 20 above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 124,454 square meters, utilizing a combination of steel reinforced concrete for the basement and steel/wood construction for the upper floors.
Renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, known for designing Kansai International Airport’s Terminal 1 building, designs the new headquarters. The building will feature an exterior of glass curtain walls encasing wooden pillars and beams. Cross-laminated timber will be used for the floor structures, maximizing the use of wood wherever possible.
By utilizing timber, the carbon dioxide emissions generated during construction will be reduced by approximately 30% compared to conventional buildings of similar size. The project will also incorporate high-efficiency systems, district heating and cooling, and renewable energy sources to enhance energy efficiency. A lush rooftop garden will also be established.
